A winter tree
While I was out at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay festivities, I spotted this tree, which looked completely stunning under the floodlights. I couldn’t resist a quick photo!

Happy New Year from Edinburgh, Scotland
The opening event at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations culminated in a spectacular firework display, with lasers lighting the sky above, and a huge bonfire on the side of the hill. I was lucky to be right beside this when it went up.
With warm wishes for the coming year!

Winter snow
Here’s a couple of my favourite snowy landscape photos from last year’s freeze, taken on a trip to Wiston Lodge.

Footprints
This was one of those perfect days for landscape photography – or it would have been if I had had my wellies with me! A group of us were staying at Wiston Lodge in the Scottish borders, early in January last year. It was an amazing weekend with deep snow lying, sharp frosts overnight, and clear sunny days. I decided to get up early to take some dawn photos, and had trouble tearing myself away from it all – I nearly missed breakfast!

Edinburgh’s winter funfair
The Princes Street funfair has arrived for the winter…great for night time photos!

This is my photo for this week’s ‘celebration’ theme at The Gallery. The arrival of the funfair always seems to me like the point where Edinburgh’s Christmas and New year’s festivities start.
Winter berries
Spotted at the back of St Mary’s Cathedral this afternoon.

Not so long now…
If you happen to love Christmas, and are feeling ultra organised, I’ve just been updating the website shop with some wintery Scottish photos that would make lovely Christmas cards.
Only 91 days to go, I believe…

The night afore
The Vikings were in town tonight, giving it laldy on their way to the ship on top of Calton Hill. It looks like a wee toy here, but it was probably over 20 foot tall. There were apparently 20,000 folk up there watching. The ship looked pretty peaceful just before the Vikings arrived on the hill and set fire to it…

…and after the boat burning, there was a full immersion fireworks display – they were going off all around us. It was some display, but undoubtedly just a small warm up for the bells.

Still frozen
I’m amazed at how quickly it warmed up today. My central heating is switched off, and it was too hot for a jacket when I was out this afternoon. Despite that, the canal is still pretty much frozen solid, with just a little water on the surface, which created some lovely effects as the sun started to go down.

Scottish party preparations
After a lovely evening at the final Tass session for 2010, I walked home via Princes Street. There’s been plenty of activity going on in Princes Street gardens, getting ready for the Hogmanay street party and fireworks. And the castle is looking stunning!

…and another snowy one…
The cathedral looks pretty dramatic in the morning sun…

Evening lights
I went out this afternoon looking for some photos with a bit of colour…and was drawn back to the funfair at the East end of Princes Street when I noticed that the lights on the big wheel are working again…it’s a fine sight!

A bit of city centre colour
The white stuff is everywhere, and this morning, it’s way below freezing too. More snow is forecast for today and tomorrow. Lots of events have been cancelled over the last few days…but it’s soooo beautiful out there!
I loved the colours of the RSA gallery building in this photo.

Winter snow in Edinburgh, Scotland
Another jaunt into the snow before work. Today my wanderings took me to the Meadows, past the old infirmary building, and onto George IV Bridge. The sun came out all too briefly, just as I got to the top of Candlemaker Row.

As I meandered down the mound, I was struck by the lack of colour round about.

Calton Hill, Edinburgh, on a snowy winter morning
I nipped up Calton Hill this morning, before I went into work. just as I arrived, the dark clouds started rolling in. It was another 20 minutes before the next dump of snow happened, though, so there was time for a few photos.

By the time I was at the top, there was just one wee hole in the black clouds, sitting over the hills in Fife. It didn’t last long!

Dawn from Calton Hill
Amazing watching the sun coming up this morning from Calton Hill. What a beautiful city Edinburgh is!

For those of you who are snowed in…
It’s carried on snowing overnight in Edinburgh. Schools are shut, and the airport is closed. Buses and cars are abandoned on the roadside. But doesn’t it all look beautiful? It’s definitely time to get out there with the camera today!
In the meantime, here’s one more from last winter’s big snowfall:
