Hogmanay in Edinburgh – fireworks
New Year celebrations
The city is buzzing in the build-up to the Edinburgh Hogmanay fireworks tonight. Last night’s start to the festivities, the torchlit procession, and the son et lumiere on Calton Hill, was spectacular. There was a wee taster of the fireworks to come, too. It was hard to know where to look – the fireworks were shooting off in all directions!

Happy New Year from Edinburgh, Scotland
The opening event at Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations culminated in a spectacular firework display, with lasers lighting the sky above, and a huge bonfire on the side of the hill. I was lucky to be right beside this when it went up.
With warm wishes for the coming year!

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations
Tonight was Edinburgh’s official start to the Hogmanay celebrations. The torchlit procession started on the High Street, and made its way down the mound and onto Calton Hill. There was a great lighting show before the fireworks kicked off.

Edinburgh’s winter funfair
The Princes Street funfair has arrived for the winter…great for night time photos!
Helter skelter and big wheel at the Princes Street funfair, Edinburgh

This is my photo for this week’s ‘celebration’ theme at The Gallery. The arrival of the funfair always seems to me like the point where Edinburgh’s Christmas and New year’s festivities start.
Adrenaline rush for sale
The ice rink and street markets have gone and the centre of town is back to being full of shoppers, communters, and office workers on their lunch breaks. Doesn’t it seem quiet?
The city’s Hogmanay visitors have drifted off back home, full of memories of some great celebrations, and for some brave souls, some hefty doses of adrenaline…

Wheeeeeee!
I took my tripod out last week, and started playing around with shutter speeds. I’ve seen several variations on this photo taken by other people already, so thought I’d give it a go too. I rather like the way the traffic becomes ghostly.

Can you hear them scream?
If you’ve been into the centre of Edinburgh in the last couple of days, you’ll probably have seen the funfair that has set up near the top of the mound. It’s full of adrenaline surges…particularly on this ride, which uses a couple of huge poles, lengths of elastic and a small metal pod to hurtle two people up into the sky. It’s pretty dramatic at night.

Add in a slow shutter speed, and you get some interesting effects!

The night afore
The Vikings were in town tonight, giving it laldy on their way to the ship on top of Calton Hill. It looks like a wee toy here, but it was probably over 20 foot tall. There were apparently 20,000 folk up there watching. The ship looked pretty peaceful just before the Vikings arrived on the hill and set fire to it…

…and after the boat burning, there was a full immersion fireworks display – they were going off all around us. It was some display, but undoubtedly just a small warm up for the bells.

Scottish party preparations
After a lovely evening at the final Tass session for 2010, I walked home via Princes Street. There’s been plenty of activity going on in Princes Street gardens, getting ready for the Hogmanay street party and fireworks. And the castle is looking stunning!
