Tarskavaig beach on the isle of Skye

Tarskavaig beach on the Isle of Skye

I was on a photography course on Skye recently, when we went on a day trip which included Tarskavaig beach. It was a cracking location to stop and take photos. This beach is lovely, and just around the corner there is a tiny disused church nestled down by the sea. Just over to the west, you can see the dramatic Cuillin Hills from the west coast of Sleat.

Tarskavaig is on a loop road which starts at Kilbeg near Sabhal mor Ostaig, and loops round through Tarskavaig and Ord before rejoining the A851 just north of Teangue.

Inchkeith island from Kinghorn

The summer appears to be upon us, at least for today. I took a wee jaunt along the Fife coast, and ended up on the beach in Kinghorn. There were plenty of people out enjoying the weather. The tide was way out, so there was plenty of space.

Luskentyre sunset

For anyone who visits Harris in the Outer Hebrides in Scotland, the beaches  are a definite draw. Luskentyre is possibly the best known of the Harris beaches. At low tide, it’s an enormous expanse of golden sand. And it has the benefit, as it is on the west of the island, of some pretty photogenic sunsets as well.

Clouds over Porty beach, Edinburgh

One of the things I love about living in Scotland, is how easy it is to get to such a wide variety of places. In and around Edinburgh, there’s plenty of options for city photos, but the coast is also pretty handy. This is one of my favourite nearby places for a quick fix of landscape photography.

Patterns in the sand

I seem to be finding all sorts of reflections around at the moment. I loved this mix of the ripples on the sand on Portobello beach and the clouds reflected in the water.

Reflections on Portobello beach

There were some amazing clouds around this morning at Portobello beach, just as the tide was heading out. It made for some interesting effects around the shore.

Harris, Outer Hebrides

Beautiful beaches in the Scottish Highlands

The last batch of photos from my recent trip to the Outer Hebrides.

We arrived off the Uig ferry in the early evening, and were treated to fantastic light on Luskentyre beach. We just had to stop for a wee wander, before heading on to pitch the tents!

Before we went to St Kilda, we camped at Horgabost on Harris. It’s a great wee campsite, and a wonderful spot for taking photos. (Although the man I overheard telling his pal that he’d just dropped his expensive camera into the sea may not see it that way. He was rinsing his soggy DSLR out in a bucket of fresh water at that point!)

There were some amazing patterns in the sand. This one looks more like a forest than a beach.

We had an extra day’s wait for the St Kilda trip – delayed by a big storm that came in on the Friday afternoon – so we spent a grey windy day around the South end of Harris, and decided to go for a wander on the beach at Scarista.

The wind was really whipping up  - by this point  I was pretty glad we weren’t on that St Kilda boat!

From Taransay, you can see the West coast of Harris (most of the time!). It’s particularly spectacular as the sun rises.

I’m sure those cloud formations over the hill tops must have a name – does anyone know?

Anyone who has been to the Outer Hebrides and seen the sea will know how clear the water is. it’s accentuated as soon as the sun comes out.

I’m quite sure I’ll be drawn back to the Outer Hebrides before long!

Overlooking Horgabost on Harris

We’ve just spent two weeks on the lovely island of Taransay in the Outer Hebrides. I took this photo while we were waiting for  the RIB back to Horgabost on Harris.

Sticks and stones

Another photo for the Moving Red Gallery – thanks Isobel for the suggestion for this title!

This dog was raring to go, flinging itself into the sea after whatever the owner was throwing in…I’m using a bit of creative license to assume there must have been the odd stick and stone in the collection he was trying to retrieve!
